In reported speech the conjunctive I is used.

Have a look at these examples:

Er sagt: "Ich lese das Buch." He says: "I read a book." Er sagt, dass er das Buch lese. He says that he reads a book. Er sagt: "Du kaufst Brot." He says: "You buy bread." Er sagt, dass du Brot kaufest. He says that you buy bread. Er sagt: "Er schenkt ihr ein Fahrrad."   He says: "He give her a bicycle." Er sagt, dass er ihr ein Fahrrad schenke.   He says that he give her a bicycle.
