Man wollte eben die Aufklärung dieses wunderbaren Geheimnisses von ihm verlangen, als vier schöne Mädchen zu der Pforte des Tempels hereintraten. An der Harfe, dem Sonnenschirm und dem Felsstuhl erkannte man sogleich die Begleiterinnen Liliens, aber die vierte, schöner als die drei, war eine Unbekannte, die scherzend schwesterlich mit ihnen durch den Tempel eilte und die silbernen Stufen hinanstieg.
Wirst du mir künftig mehr glauben, liebes Weib? sagte der Mann mit der Lampe zu der Schönen; wohl dir und jedem Geschöpfe, das sich diesen Morgen im Flusse badet!
Die verjüngte und verschönerte Alte, von deren Bildung keine Spur mehr übrig war, umfaßte mit belebten jugendlichen Armen den Mann mit der Lampe, der ihre Liebkosungen mit Freundlichkeit aufnahm. Wenn ich dir zu alt bin, sagte er lächelnd, so darfst du heute einen anderen Gatten wählen; von heute an ist keine Ehe gültig, die nicht aufs neue geschlossen wird. |

The approach of four beautiful maidens, who advanced to the door of the temple, prevented any inquiry into this wonderful mystery. Three of them were recognised as the attendants of the beautiful Lily, by the harp, the fan, and the ivory chair; but the fourth, though more beautiful than the other three was a stranger. She, however, played with the others with sisterly sportiveness, ran with them through the temple, and ascended the silver stairs. "Thou dearest of creatures," said the man with the lamp, addressing the beautiful Lily, "you will surely believe me for the future. Happy for thee, and every other creature, who shall bathe this morning in the waters of the river!"
The old woman, who had been transformed into a beautiful young girl, and of whose former appearance no trace remained, embraced the man with the lamp with tender caresses, which he returned with affection. "If I am too old for you," he said with a smile, "you may select another bridegroom; for no tie can henceforth be considered binding which is not this day renewed."
