  31.5.2.2 Use as predicative adjective or adverb

When using the superlative as predicative adjective (meaning: put behind the noun it describes) or as adverb the preposition am is to be used.

  Some examples  
Er isst am schnellsten von allen. (adverb)
  = He eats fastest of them all.
  Was mich am meisten störte, war, dass er nie etwas sagte. (adverb)
  = What bothers me most is, that he never said anything.
  Sein Auto ist am schnellsten. (predicative adjective)
  = His car is the fastest.
