Note! The conjunction zu is used to add an infinitive or a participle to a phrase. The translation is usually to (but not always). This makes this conjunction a little bit special.

Example Er liest Goethe, damit er auf der nächsten Party was zu erzählen hat. = He reads Goethe that he has something to tell at the next party. Das ist ein zu bedauerndes Phänomen. = It is a regrettable phenomenon.
