Goethe: Faust

IV.13 Der Nachbarin Haus (The neighbour's house)

Mephistopheles does not have any chance in getting in direct contact to Margaret, he introduces himself to the neighbour Martha. He uses the fact that he knows everything about the life of people and tells a lie. He knows that the husband of Martha has left her and gone to another country. But he presents himself as a friend of her husband, who in his dying has asked him to inform her about his death. Knowing that Margaret will be at this neighbours house he agreed a meeting the next day with Faust, who is supposed to give more information about the circumstances Martha's husband died.
